As we near the end of August, it would be fitting to reflect on Women’s Month and the extraordinary achievements of women worldwide. Yet, it has been Kamala Harris who has captivated our attention.
She re-ignited a global conversation about challenging the norm and pushing boundaries, Harris continues to shatter expectations and redefine what leadership looks like. She’s not just occupying spaces traditionally dominated by men; she’s transforming them.
And sheâs not alone. There are many wonderful examples of women who are boldly challenging the status quo, not only politically or at the Olympics, but also here at home:
Nokx Majozi: Starting her career in Rosewood Londonâs Holborn Dining Room, under chef Calum Franklin, Nokx has worked her way up to become a celebrated sous chef, holding the title and head pie maker in the renowned restaurantâs Pie Room. Between being named one of the 100 Most Influential Women in Hospitality by CODE, two years running, and giving childrenâs pie-making masterclasses, Majozi also works with Women in Hospitality â an organisation set up to nurture the careers of aspiring female chefs.
Holly Tucker: The visionary behind notonthehighstreet and Holly & Co, has transformed the retail landscape by championing small brands and creatives. Over the past two decades, she has come out in support of independent makers and has reshaped how to value creativity and entrepreneurship. She now focuses on inspiring women to be the fullest version of themselves through the way they live, work, and shop.
As a small business ourselves, we know the magic and impact supporting local small businesses can make.
Simone Biles: The world watched as she took a stand for mental health at the Tokyo Olympics, reminding us that strength isnât just about physical prowess. This year we saw magic happen, the moment when Simone and her US team bowed to gold medal winner Rebeca Andrade – the first gold medalist in Brazil’s history.Â

H is for Happiness
In Episode 347 of the UYB podcast, the discussion zeroes in on the âBig Hâ Happiness vs. âSmall hâ happiness. Weâre socialised to play it safe, keep small, and not put ourselves out there for fear of judgment, failure, and shame. But what if we dared to shift our focus?
The episode dives deep into how the small âhâ happiness, defined as the absence of feeling bad, can sometimes keep us from pursuing the more authentic âBig H Happiness.â
This larger vision of happiness is about creating a life that feels true to you, even if it means taking emotional risks. Itâs a thought-provoking listen that challenges us to redefine happiness on our own terms. Sit back and press play.

Raising ađ¸to women in the industry
Every month we sit down and chat with some of the incredible women who work in this crazy industry.
The Thinkers, Creators, Doers, and Deciders.
The women who inspire us.
Weâre thrilled to shine a spotlight on Tamsyn Gia Strydom (soon to be Burger) from MGG Productions, a woman whose work in technical production is as inspiring as it is groundbreaking. Get to know her:
1. What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Well, mostly the crazy call times that the technical production industry demands. Weâre always first in and last out, armed with nothing but a strong cup of Woolies ground coffee and a dream. Itâs like being part of a secret society where the password is âAre we on schedule?â So, basically, itâs the caffeine, chaos and camaraderie that gets me up.
2. Favourite event hack?
Using a tablecloth as draping. You gotta make a plan!
3. If you could stage a production anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Remote desert with mountains like Mojave desert in Las Vegas or in the Middle East. Bringing the mountain to life with projections and lighting under a starry sky.
4. Whatâs your go-to source of inspiration when youâre on the move?
People! I love working as part of a creative team with decades of experience. From inception to invoice, manifesting the client’s vision with all our unique input. Sure, sometimes I muck around on Pinterest, pretending I’m looking for ideas and not just getting distracted by cat memes.
5. If you could only use one tool for your productions, what would it be?
A 25k Laser Projector. Itâs crisp and takes up less space in the truck, which is always a win.
6. Breaking stereotypes: What advice would you give to young women looking to enter the technical production industry?
If you are not going to be a project manager, I suggest you choose a specialty or discipline and get extremely good at it as this is a male-dominated industry.
7. Whatâs in your handbag?
It is actually a suitcase, with wheels.
Laptop and accessories, a variety of hard drives, memory sticks, and SSD Cards. Of course – my own Janus and plug strip. A bag full of pens and sharpies and the essentials: Cable ties, Gaffer tape, Just BEE Propolis ointment and plasters.
BONUS: What song is on repeat on your playlist?
Big Sean – Bounce Back
For years we were told the great secret that all women hold can be found in their handbag. Ask anyone whoâs been asked to dig something out of another personâs handbag, and all sorts of social norms get thrown up.
I love the idea of whatâs in someoneâs handbag as a gauge of what their every day looks like â continue to follow what goes on inside the handbags of the team, partners, and clients in upcoming newsletters.

Case Study | Step into inclusivity and diversity

At True North, weaving inclusivity and diversity into our event design is the cornerstone of our approach to events and communication. We wove these values into our work for Anglo Americanâs Inclusivity and Diversity conference, fostering inclusive spaces and facilitating important discussions. Not only covering issues around women in work but important questions around GBV, disability and wellness.
âWe are exceptionally proud of this event. We took on a multifaceted and important conference where we felt we created a platform for real change. The brief was nuanced and our creative design and strategic program content needed to be sensitive, yet impactful. We managed to achieve that and had great feedback from the client and attendees.â – Daria Higgins
The Challenge
Our client recognised the need for more in-depth discussions and exploration of critical issues in order to ensure the ongoing success of their people management. They sought to address this by organizing an Inclusivity and Diversity conference that would foster inclusive spaces and facilitate these important conversations.
The Solution
To meet the clientâs objectives, we developed a highly immersive and interactive one-day conference tailored for 400 local staff. The conference focused on key aspects of inclusivity and diversity management as part of their broader people management strategy. Attendees were exposed to a diverse range of perspectives through a combination of local and external speakers, as well as engaging digital and live content.
The conference environment was carefully designed to create a safe space where open and honest conversations could thrive. Delegates were encouraged to take ownership of the solutions applicable to their respective businesses, with various platforms provided to facilitate discussions and collaborative problem-solving.
Scope of work
Our involvement spanned various critical aspects, each contributing to the overall success of the event.
Conference Design
At the core of our responsibilities was the design of the entire conference experience. We took charge of crafting the eventâs creative design and overarching strategy. This included the development of program content, meticulously aligning every detail, from the plenary sessions to the breakaway sessions and workgroup management. Our expertise extended to stage and technical design, ensuring a seamless and captivating experience for attendees. We also handled the design and production of collateral, encompassing both print and digital elements, to create a cohesive and visually appealing event.
Guest and Speaker Management
Managing the presence and needs of guests and speakers was another pivotal aspect of our role. We took care of every detail, ensuring a smooth and welcoming experience for all involved.
Project Management
Full project management encompassed developing project plans, managing budgets, and engaging with stakeholders to ensure that every aspect of the conference aligned with our clientâs vision and objectives.
Conference Execution
As we transitioned from planning to execution, our team played a pivotal role in designing the overall conference collateral. This included the development of the event brand and the creation of compelling materials for breakaway sessions, the plenary, and even digital pre-recorded content. We also introduced unique elements like sound baths and interactive engagement opportunities, both in the digital and print realms, to enhance the eventâs overall appeal.
Health & Safety
We formulated a comprehensive health and safety plan to ensure the well-being of all attendees and staff throughout the event.
Venue Management
Venue management, including food and beverage arrangements, was seamlessly handled by our team to guarantee a delightful and hassle-free experience for all.
Staffing and RSVP Management
We provided staffing and full RSVP management, ensuring that every logistical aspect of the conference was expertly coordinated.
